With his new exhibition INCARNATION, opening at Galerie Deschler for Berlin Art Week 2025, Berlin-based painter Lennart Grau presents works that are at once overwhelming and fragile, theatrical and fractured, contemporary and suffused with historical echoes. In his color-saturated, often surreally distorted figures and groups of figures, there resonates an awareness of the history of painting—especially the Baroque, an era shaped, like our own, by crisis, profound uncertainty, and the consciousness of transience.
“Incarnation” means embodiment, a central foundation of Western art since antiquity. In Lennart Grau’s work, however, it takes on a paradoxical form: his half-naked, sculptural figures seem to emerge out of airy, watercolor-like backgrounds, only to dissolve back into them in the next instant. Compared to his earlier works, these paintings appear lighter, more permeable, shot through with a deliberate use of emptiness. Grau’s painting becomes a dance between states of matter: corporeal, fluid, ethereal. His technique echoes this impression—acrylic paint is poured directly from the bottle onto the wet, floor-laid canvas, shaped and spread into fleeting transitions, with the element of chance playing a role as well. Thus, his figures mirror the contemporary body: a body that, in the age of plastic surgery, digital retouching, deep fakes, and endless self-presentation, increasingly loses its fixed contours.
As early as the 17th century, painters staged the world as a theater, a theatrum mundi, an illusion meant to captivate both eye and mind. Grau’s figures, too, recall Baroque poses in their drama and exuberant pathos. Yet they remain without faces, without mythological or religious framework. Whereas Baroque painting used gesture for carrying meaning, Grau’s figures hover in a liminal space between figuration and abstraction; their interactions and statements remain enigmatic.
Then as now, truths are fragile. In the Baroque era, religious conflicts divided society, and art became a medium of persuasion and manipulation. Today, in the age of “post-truth,” fake news, conspiracy theories, social echo chambers, and AI-generated images, we experience a similar crisis of the real. Our perception is fragmentary, accelerated, suspicious of what appears authentic. Amid this flood of images Grau’s works pose the question: What is real, what is constructed—and what will endure?
Just as in the 17th century, our era, too, is marked by political uncertainty and crisis. Wars, migration, climate change, and social upheaval create a climate of instability. Grau’s painting responds not with promises of salvation but with depictions of fracture. His compositions are reflections on the fragile nature of the image as well as of the body as incarnation of the human spirit—but also of its impressive, inexhaustible mutability. He combines the Baroque desire for overwhelming intensity with the skeptical reflexiveness of contemporary art. Where ceiling frescoes once opened the heavens, the pictorial spaces emerging in his paintings are seductive yet unstable, their meaning left unresolved. Where Baroque vanitas symbols reminded us of mortality, he presents dissolving figures that call identity and reality itself into question.
INCARNATION celebrates the power of painting while at the same time revealing how uncertain our world has become. The works show embodiments in transition: figures that appear and disappear, images that both fascinate and destabilize—critical mirrors of our time and echoes of a past that feels strikingly relevant today.

Anlässlich des 650-jährigen Jubiläums von Sacrow präsentiert Ars Sacrow e.V. Werke aus der renommierten Miettinen Collection, einer der bedeutendsten privaten Kunstsammlungen zeitgenössischer Kunst in Europa. Schloss Sacrow wird im Rahmen der Reihe Museum für einen Sommer in diesem Jahr wieder zu einem besonderen Ort der Kunsterfahrung und der Reflexion über die Beziehung von Kunst, Körper und Natur.
Michael M. Thoss, Kurator der Ausstellung, ist zu Recht stolz einen Teil der Sammlung nach Sacrow holen zu können: „Timo Miettinen ist ein wahrer Kulturbotschafter Finnlands in Berlin. Er versteckt seine Sammlung nicht hinter hohen Mauern, sondern macht sie regelmäßig der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Die rund 2000 Kunstwerke Miettinen Collection sind nicht nur Ausdruck der professionellen Leidenschaft seines Sammlers, sondern bieten einen guten Überblick über aktuelle Tendenzen zeitgenössischer Kunstproduktion. Ihre Stärke liegt in ihrer Vielfalt und Ausdruckskraft.“
Ergeben hat sich die Kooperation mit dem Ars Sacrow e.V. im vergangenen Jahr. Bereits für die Ausstellung mit Werken der Generation Z in 2024 hat Timo Miettinen einen beachtlichen Teil der Ausstellung gestellt. Mit über 5.000 Besucher:innen war „Gegen den Strich. Kunst der Generation Z“ eine erfolgreiche Schau in Sacrow. Unter dem Titel „Exit Paradise“ versammelt die Ausstellung rund 130 Werke von mehr als 50 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus vier Kontinenten. Inspiriert vom biblischen Motiv der Vertreibung aus dem Paradies thematisiert die Schau das Spannungsfeld zwischen Körperlichkeit und Entfremdung, Erotik und Revolte, Natürlichkeit und Manipulation. Die zwölf Themenstationen der Ausstellung illustrieren eindrucksvoll, wie sich Körperbilder von den klassischen Schönheitsidealen emanzipieren und von den Avantgarden als Experimentierfeld für ästhetische und politische Diskurse genutzt werden, in denen sich die gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche ihrer Zeit widerspiegeln. Während klassische Darstellungen von Körperlichkeit zumeist auf religiöse oder weltliche Ideale rekurrieren, zeigen die ausgewählten Werke der Miettinen Collection fragmentierte, poppige und queere Körperbilder, die auf veränderte Rollenbilder und Körperkonzepte, Gruppenzugehörigkeiten und Geschlechterzuschreibungen verweisen.
„Exit Paradise“ vermittelt das sich wandelnde Verständnis von Körperlichkeit in ihren Repräsentationen und Ritualen, Identitätsdiskursen und somatischen Narrativen, wie sie von Kunstschaffenden des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts auf vielfältige Weise aufgegriffen und interpretiert werden. Die Ausstellung „Exit Paradise“ im Schloss Sacrow ist Teil einer größeren Ausstellungsreihe der ca. 2000 Werke umfassenden Miettinen Collection, die anlässlich des 70. Geburtstags des Sammlers mit Stationen in Berlin, Helsinki und Düsseldorf stattfindet.

In the new group exhibition, Galerie Deschler is presenting works by five promising young artists who live and work in Berlin: Anna Nezhnaya, Noah Becker, Fedor Deichmann, Roman Frechen and Lennart Grau. Despite the obvious differences in their very individual approaches, similarities quickly emerge on closer inspection. With diverse and creative approaches, they enter into a dialogue both with the past that shapes their present, and with the rich and colorful flood of images our contemporary culture keeps producing, recycling, transforming and depositing in the wide world of the (social) media and the depths of the Internet. In the context of an age of global multicultural eclecticism, it of course makes perfect sense to take advantage, for reinterpretations and transformations, of the treasure chest of visual material from the most diverse sources, traditions and cultural circles. With detours and references across art history and pop culture, from Rococo paintings to Expressionism and contemporary manga aesthetics, they integrate these found gems into their own personal vision. Paradoxically, the borrowings from a multitude of visual traditions and contexts can be read simultaneously in very different or even contradictory ways: as a nostalgic evocation of spatially or temporally distant living environments perceived as more homogeneous in comparison to the present; as an ironic reflection of a kind of Babylonian confusion of languages in the visual realm, which has become increasingly widespread since postmodernism; but also as a relaxed approach to this reality, which is now taken for granted and accepted as such.

Der Auswahlprozess, wie ihn die Herausgeber Mark Gisbourne und Christoph Tannert für Buch und Ausstellung vollzogen haben, orientierte sich konsequent am Stichdatum 1972 und war ansonsten an jenen Stimmen interessiert, die der Allgemeinheit noch nicht und in dem einen oder anderen Fall selbst in der Fachöffentlichkeit noch zu wenig bekannt sind.
Die Herausgeber von DISSONANCE. Platform Germany wagen ein Urteil, decken Unerwartetes auf und suchen den Mehrwert in ästhetisch mitreißenden Leistungen programmatischer Pluralität, die ihren malereirelevanten Bedeutungszugewinn zum Teil noch suchen. Wenn Publikation und Ausstellung als Tatort und ungedeckter Wechsel für Zukünftiges gelesen werden würde, hätte sich ihr Anspruch erfüllt.

Lennart Grau’s almost brutal use of colours is a fascinating counterpoint in his interest in the ease and jauntiness of the Rokoko. Impressed by the human ability of decadence, as particularly embodied by this former society, the artist feels inspired to emphasize tawdry themes. For Grau, angels, classic still lifes and epic stagings represent perfect models to reveal the shallow glamour of this era and to shape these typical ornaments into neat ulcers. In reduced, abstract studies, in which the artists deals with the effect of real and painted light and shadow, Grau is always in search of innovative techniques of the Trompe L’oeil.
With these moments of irritation, the painter attempts to engender mistrust on behalf of the beholder that on the one hand is seductive, but on the other hand also contains a doubtful undertone. As in Impressionism, the representation of light and ambient conditions becomes the artist’s key task. An art movement that, even back then, has always been connected with innovation, progress and critical thinking, is revived by the work of Lennart Grau and transformed into a three-dimensional image. Lennart has completed his studies of fine arts as an alumni of Prof Leiko Ikemura at the University der Künste in Berlin in 2012.

Lennart Graus geradezu brutaler Umgang mit Farbe findet einen faszinierenden Gegenpol durch künstlerische Anleihen aus der Leichtigkeit und der Unbeschwertheit des Rokoko. Beeindruckt von der menschlichen Fähigkeit zur Dekadenz, wie sie besonders diese vergangene Gesellschaft verkörpert, fühlt sich der Künstler zu provokant kitschigen Zitaten inspiriert: Engel, klassische Stillleben und epische Inszenierungen sind für ihn perfekte Vorlagen, um malerisch den oberflächlichen Glanz dieser Epoche schmelzen zu lassen und dessen typische Ornamente zu hübschen Geschwüren zu formen. In reduzierten, abstrakten Studien, bei denen sich der Künstler mit der Wirkung von realem und gemaltem Licht und Schatten beschäftigt, ist er immer wieder auf der Suche nach innovativen Techniken des Trompe L’oeil.
Durch die Inszenierungen von Irritationsmomenten möchte Grau beim Rezipienten ein Misstrauen auslösen, das verführerisch ist und dabei einen zwielichtigen Unterton behält. Die Darstellungen des Lichtes und der atmosphärischen Bedingungen werden wie einst im Impressionismus zu seiner Hauptaufgabe. Eine Kunstbewegung, die schon zu ihrer Zeit mit Innovation, Fortschritt sowie kritischem Denken verbunden war, wird bei Lennart Grau neu belebt und entwickelt sich zu einem dreidimensionalen Bildwerk. Grau hat sein Studium der Bildenden Künste als Meisterschüler bei Prof. Leiko Ikemura 2012 an der Universität der Künste in Berlin abgeschlossen.

La manipulation presque brutale de la peinture par Lennart Grau est un contrepoint fascinant à travers ses obligations artistique entre la légèreté et l’insouciance du rococo. Impressionné par la décadence humaine de cette époque et celle de cette société en particulier, l’artiste se sent inspiré par des thèmes « crapuleux » et sordide. Pour Grau les anges, les natures mortes classiques ainsi que les mises en scènes épiques, représentent des modèles parfaits pour révéler le charme profond de cette époque et de façonner ces ornements typiques. Dans des études réduites et abstraites dans lesquelles l’artiste joue avec des effets de lumière et d’ombre réels et peints, Grau est constamment à la recherche de techniques innovantes de trompe l’œil.
Avec ces moments d’irritations, Grau souhaite déclencher de la méfiance, qui d’un côté est sensée séduire le spectateur et de l’autre côté le mettre mal à l’aise. Comme dans l’impressionnisme, la représentation de l’éclairage et de l’atmosphère devient sa tâche principale. Un mouvement artistique qui à l’époque de son initiation a été considéré comme innovant, progressiste avec un esprit critique est en train de renaître avec Lennart Grau par ses créations en trois dimensions. Lennart Grau est diplômé des Beaux-Arts et Meisterschüler du professeur Leiko Ikemura de l’Université des Beaux-Arts de Berlin. Grau vit et travaille à Berlin.
